Covance's 100+ Violations

This is a shortened version of a recent list of over 100 alleged violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act documented by a Covance employee inside their Vienna, VA laboratory. These acts led to an investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and fines by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
 

This validates the complete disregard Covance has for our nation's laws, rules and guidelines.

1.        Striking, choking, screaming and cursing at "uncooperative", frightened and sick monkeys

2.        Slamming monkeys into their cages after they've had dosing tubes rammed down their noses and throats

3.        Hosing down cages with sick, injured or recovering monkeys and/or dogs still inside

4.        Slamming cages to terrorize loose monkeys out of hiding. Slamming the head of an escaped monkey against concrete

5.        Chronic rectal prolapses - painful protrusions of the intestines through the rectum, resulting from constant stress and diarrhea

6.        Denial of veterinary care - horrifying deaths in drug tests in which the veterinarian was forbidden to examine, treat or euthanize

7.        Inappropriate sized dosing tubes - small monkeys dosed with large tubes forced up their nostrils and down into their stomachs, causing choking, gagging, and daily bloody noses

8.        Self-mutilation resulting from Covance's failure to provide psychological enrichment and socialization. Written plans never fulfilled

9.        Inadequate veterinary care. Injuries left untreated until they became necrotic. Broken arm untreated for 4 days.

10.     Non-stop blaring loud rock music, creating discomfort and alarm

11.     Physical and psychological abuse of primates falling outside of the written study parameters

12.     Falsifying records to cover up problems with the health of study animals and worker incompetence, as well as who actually performed procedures to cover up inadequate training of personnel. Lack of employee training and supervision. Uncertified employees anesthetizing animals.

13.     Teasing, taunting, and yelling at primates for amusement

14.     Knowingly using unhealthy animals in studies

15.     Painful procedures performed in full view of other primates

16.     Improperly grounded medical equipment burning research animals

17.     During new technician training the new employees were told that there is nothing wrong with screaming or cursing at the monkeys, and forcing the monkeys to "dance". The Covance trainer told the new employees that the monkeys like to dance.

18.     Removing the quarantine sign from the quarantine room so that employees did not have to wear the required medical protection gowns

19.     Intoxicated employees performing lab procedures on monkeys

20.     Covance research director not euthanizing sick monkeys when directed to do so by the veterinarian

21.     Failure to isolate imported primates

22.     Malaria-infected monkeys still used in studies for pharmaceuticals

23.     Lying about the cause of death for three monkeys found dead in their cages one morning
