PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS
HAZARDOUS WASTES IN OUR WATER?
What are Covance's plans for disposal of hazardous waste, i.e. unapproved chemicals, drugs, animal waste, blood and carcasses? Currently, video tapes show cages being flushed with high power hoses into drains. What will be the ramifications of this toxic residue being washed into Chandler's wastewater system?
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Covance has admitted
serious risks to its stockholders that they
haven't been as quick to
share with Chandler residents. In their quarterly
10-Q Report
(which is something publicly-traded companies
are required by law to
file with the SEC) Covance admits that they face
a range of potential
liabilities as a company. Among them is "risks that animals in our
breeding facilities may be infected with diseases that
may be harmful
and even lethal to themselves and humans, despite
preventative measures contained in our company policies for the
quarantine and handling of imported animals."

INCINERATOR CONCERNS
The Covance
incinerator in Madison was deemed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources in 2003 to be a “significant source” of particulate matter,
sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen fluoride,
hydrogen chloride, cadmium, mercury, and dioxin. Is this safe for our
residential communities? What faction of government will
monitor these important issues with Covance's planned
incinerator?
Chapter 30-3.4 section C of the Chandler
Municipal Code states:
"It is unlawful to erect
or continue the use of any building,
structure, room or other
place or thing within the City for the
exercise of any trade or process which, by noxious discharges,
including but not limited to smoke, soot, dust, fumes, gases,
offensive odors or other annoyances, (1) is discomforting or
offensive to a reasonable person of normal sensitivity or, (2)
detrimental to the health of individuals or the public."
WORKPLACE
DISCRIMINATION
After an
African-American man complained about racial harassment and filed a
complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission, Covance (then
Hazelton) treated him more stringently with respect to discipline and
the terms and conditions of employment, then fired him in retaliation
for exercising his rights. View the actual
court case.
